Natalia and Samuel went on the type of honeymoon most people can only dream about–and the wild spirit in me loves how unconventional it was. After a jaw-dropping wedding in France, they set out to see the rest of Europe together. One look at Natalia’s Instagram page, and you’ll see they had quite the trip. As she states in one of her posts, “we had an incredible honeymoon visiting places that leave you without words.” One of the places she and her hubby visited that caught my eye was Hallstatt, Austria. Usually I see honeymooners flying off to destinations with warm, sandy beaches and staying in luxurious resorts, but these two chose to include something a little different in their itinerary.
Natalia graciously wrote something up for me about her experience honeymooning next to the scenic Austrian lakes and mountains. Here’s what she had to say:
There is surely something magical in mountains. It is a place of power, place where the sky meets with the earth, place where a human receives far more than he seeks. So it wasn’t accidental that we decided to spend a week on a road trip through the Austrian Alps, enjoying incredible views, transparent lakes, picturesque mountain tops, and of course tiny villages on the road.
After several days in Vienna, we rented a car in the airport and started our trip to Hallstatt. It takes 2 hours to get to Hallstatt if you don’t stop every 30 minutes to enjoy the views and take photos. We weren’t in a hurry, so we bought some food and made a picnic by one of the lakes. These are the moments we live for.
Hallstatt by itself is very small with one square and just one street; you can cross it in 15 minutes from one corner to another. But sometimes these towns impact you more than famous capitals and that’s exactly it about Hallstatt. These small lakeside villages are the real gems of Austria.
WHERE TO STAY
It’s better to book hotels in advance, because the village is extremely popular to tourists from China. In fact, 90% of tourists are Chinese; they even built a copy of Hallstatt in China, and they love it. Everyone who saw the copy dreams of seeing the original version. I can recommend Seehotel Grüner Baum, which has an excellent view of the main square.
WHAT TO DO
You cannot miss the famous viewpoint seen in postcards. Another picturesque view is from the top of the mountain. Take the time to walk to the viewing platform. It will take 40-50 minutes to hike or 20 euro to use a cable car–and the view is spectacular.
Also, drive 15 minutes and you will arrive in Obertraun. Here, there is another cable car, which in two stages will lift you up 2100 meters to view 5 Fingers. It was named so by virtue of its hand-like shape and has been called the most spectacular viewing platform in the Alps. And if you like adrenaline, there is an option of paragliding, which is worth doing.
Austrian lakes are incredible and a must-visit for every traveler. It’s the best place to collect moments and forget about things.
