Staycation – Atlanta

Posted on

Now that we’re adults, we are responsible for the dreaded “vacation days.”  Somehow, there are just never enough in the year.  Some of us are lucky, and have an unlimited supply of paid time off, others….not so much.  If you find yourself staring at your dream summer vacation on your computer screen because you’ve ran out of vacay, fret not, take a staycation.

A staycation is an opportunity to view your city as a tourist does; take a trip to the museum or Six Flags.  Live it up, you’re on vacation!  In the first installment of our staycation series, we’ll highlight Atlanta, GA – the place the Travel Lushes call home.

What to do if you’re single in the city:

Hanging out during the dayAtlantic Station.  This eat. play. live. facility has a little bit of everything.  Take in a meal at one of the many restaurants, then browse the stores.  My favorite thing about Atlantic Station is the green space.  Catch a movie or find something special in the outdoor market. We’ve spent plenty of time there on a sunny Saturday morning eating, talking and people watching.  Enjoy!

Grabbing a drink with friendsThe Glenn Hotel.  Located in downtown Atlanta, this hotel has a fabulous rooftop bar!  Grab some friends and enjoy a drink overlooking the city.  The sunset is beautiful, the music keeps the party going and the people are beautiful.  Great night with great people.  This is one of our favorite events in the city.

Living it up at a concertCenter Stage!  This venue is one of our favorites; we’ve seen Lyfe Jennings, Solange, and Natasha Beddingfield .  The smaller space makes the concert more intimate.  Large arenas are nice, but a smaller concert hall makes you feel like the artist is right there with you (because they are).

What to do if you’re in romantic bliss:

Hanging out during the day:  Shoot the hooch!  Such a fun way to spend the day.  Tube, kayak or canoe down the Chattahoochee river.  Most. Fun. Ever.

Planning a romantic date:  Horse drawn carriage.  Take a stroll through downtown Atlanta in a romantic carriage.  Ride past Centennial Olympic Park, the World of Coca Cola and other landmarks while spending a night under the stars with your partner.  Ahhh…love is in the air!

Dinner with a twist:  Cafe Istanbul.  Turkish/Mediterranean food, hookahs, drinks and belly dancers!  This place is a must.  It’s one of my favorite restaurants in the city.  They have a diverse crowd, great food and you can dance with the belly dancers.  #winning.

What to do if you’ve got a family:

Hanging out during the day:  Six Flags!  Kids love roller coasters!  Spend the day flipping, spinning and twilering with your kids – they’ll be worn out by the time you leave – everyone’s happy.  Be sure to drink water and wear light clothing, it gets hot in Georgia!

Planning a family picnic:  Piedmont Park.  Piedmont park has it all – swimming, playgrounds and space for grilling, this park is great for families.
